July 9 - 11, 2024This course will once again be presented by Skip Collier of Professional Training Systems, Inc. Skip is highly regarded and has an extensive background in electric utility design, construction, maintenance and operation. The
EUSO Short Course is designed for any employee whose job performance
will benefit from a basic understanding of the operations side of the
business. This includes those from legal, rates, engineering,
purchasing, computer application, marketing, customer service, inventory
control, finance, accounting, safety, risk analysis as well as those
from generating plants. One goal for this class is to have students
leave with the ability to easily identify all of the electrical
equipment they see in a substation as they walk by, along with all the
equipment found on the poles in a residential area. Non-electrical
engineers are often at a disadvantage in the electric utility
environment due to a lack of familiarity with technical issues. The
better you understand the utility’s product – electrical energy – and
how it is created and distributed, the better you can serve the utility
and your customers. This course assumes no electrical background, and builds on the basics to provide a comprehensive understanding of the equipment and operations. *** Line Maintainer apprentices will receive 21 Basic OJT hours for taking the EUSO Course *** For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.Questions? A note from Jared Masker, Director of Electric Services:"Electric
Members, we have changed our hours for our basic workshop to better
serve you. We understand that three days seemed like a big ask for some
of our members. We have now gone to a two day “trial run” workshop. The
workshop will start on Wednesday at 10 am and end at 2:30 pm on
Thursday. We were able to fit the same amount of training into two
almost full days. This will allow most to travel the morning of and also
travel back home the next day. Our hope is that this will ease some of
the burden of sending your valuable workforce to get excellent
training." This workshop offers valuable information and hands-on
training for utility electric personnel. Utility workers, instructors,
and product presenters will once again join together to bring you the
latest industry information. Topics include:- Hand Ties / Armour Rods / Preforms
- Cable Prep
- Transformer Connections / Fusing
- Pole Setting & Framing
- Secondary Splicing & Wire Identification
- Secondary Risers
This workshop has a registration cap, and only several spots remain. To ensure you have a place, please register by clicking HERE. *
IAMU’s electric department now has basic and advanced workshops instead
of overhead and underground. This workshop was previously titled
“Overhead Workshop”. Questions?Contact Jared Masker at 515-289-5223 or jmasker@iamu.org

 Registration
is open for the Transformer School for Electric Line Workers taught by
Scott Meinecke, Director of Safety & Loss Control for the Iowa
Association of Electric Cooperatives. This workshop is a
combination of classroom and hands-on learning opportunities, where
participants are exposed to situations that are as “real-world” as
possible, without the real-world risk or danger. During the workshop,
the following topics will include basics of single-phase and three-phase
transformer connections and theory including turns ratios, polarities,
safe work practices, basic calculations, connections, sizing, and
troubleshooting. Participants will work with energized miniature transformers.
The transformers will blow fuses to allow participants to experience
what happens when something is wired incorrectly. The class will
continue to build on the miniature transformer banks and allow
troubleshooting. Discussion on motor rotation as it relates to
three-phase systems as well as ways to prevent voltage surges while
switching three-phase bank. This workshop is beneficial for
anyone that is involved with the electric line crew including
apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other
departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to
those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge. For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.
