Transformer School for Electric Line Workers - March 25 - 27

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, January 10, 2024
Picture Registration is open for the Transformer School for Electric Line Workers taught by Scott Meinecke, Director of Safety & Loss Control for the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.

This workshop is a combination of classroom and hands-on learning opportunities, where participants are exposed to situations that are as “real-world” as possible, without the real-world risk or danger. During the workshop, the following topics will include basics of single-phase and three-phase transformer connections and theory including turns ratios, polarities, safe work practices, basic calculations, connections, sizing, and troubleshooting. Participants will work with energized miniature
transformers. The transformers will blow fuses to allow participants to experience what happens when something is wired incorrectly. The class will continue to build on the miniature transformer banks and allow troubleshooting. Discussion on motor rotation as it relates to three-phase systems as well as ways to prevent voltage surges while switching three-phase bank.

This workshop is beneficial for anyone that is involved with the electric line crew including apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge.
