This course will once again be presented by Skip Collier of Professional Training Systems, Inc. Skip is highly regarded and has an extensive background in electric utility design, construction, maintenance, and operation. The
EUSO Short Course is designed for any employee whose job performance
will benefit from a basic understanding of the operations side of the
business. This includes those from legal, rates, engineering,
purchasing, computer application, marketing, customer service, inventory
control, finance, accounting, safety, risk analysis as well as those
from generating plants. One goal for this class is to have students
leave with the ability to easily identify all of the electrical
equipment they see in a substation as they walk by, along with all the
equipment found on the poles in a residential area. Non-electrical
engineers are often at a disadvantage in the electric utility
environment due to a lack of familiarity with technical issues. The
better you understand the utility’s product – electrical energy – and
how it is created and distributed, the better you can serve the utility
and your customers. This course assumes no electrical background, and builds on the basics to provide a comprehensive understanding of the equipment and operations. *** Line Maintainer apprentices will receive 21 Basic OJT hours for taking the EUSO Course ***For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.Questions? The
IAMU Electric Training Team and the Electric Safety and Training
Committee are excited to announce a change to our workshops. In recent
years we have noticed we were getting many attendees with less than 5
years of experience and many who have over 15 years of experience. This
has created a challenge in keeping everyone engaged with the varying
differences in knowledge. The IAMU Electric Training Team and the Electric Safety and Training Committee have a solution! We
now have our Basic Electric Distribution Workshop which will be held in
May and replaces the Overhead Electric Workshop. Our Advanced Electric
Distribution Workshop in September will replace the Underground
Electric Workshop. Please read over the topics and see which of your
workers should attend the Basic and who should attend the Advanced
Workshop. Some example topics of the Advanced Workshop are: 3 phase
transformer connections, hot work, troubleshooting, switching
procedures, storm restoration, etc. Please feel free to reach out to jmasker@iamu.org with any questions you may have regarding these classes. To sign up for the Basic Electric Distribution workshop please CLICK HERE. The deadline for hotel block reservation is 05/01/2023

Registration is open for the Transformer School
for Electric Line Workers taught by Scott Meinecke, Director of Safety
& Loss Control for the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.
This
workshop is a combination of classroom and hands-on learning
opportunities, where participants are exposed to situations that are as
“real-world” as possible, without the real-world risk or danger. During
the workshop, the following topics will include basics of single-phase
and three-phase transformer connections and theory including turns
ratios, polarities, safe work practices, basic calculations,
connections, sizing, and troubleshooting. Participants will work with
energized miniature transformers. The transformers will blow fuses to
allow participants to experience what happens when something is wired
incorrectly. The class will continue to build on the miniature
transformer banks and allow troubleshooting. Discussion on motor
rotation as it relates to three-phase systems as well as ways to prevent
voltage surges while switching three-phase bank.
This workshop
is beneficial for anyone that is involved with the electric line crew
including apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other
departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to
those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge.
Class attendees will be required to bring their own personal protective equipment, including:
- Arc Flash Shield & Hard hat
- Safety Glasses
- Secondary Rubber Gloves
- Appropriate Footwear
- Volt / Amp Meter
- Calculator
- Notebook / Pen / Pencil
