National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction May 6 – 10

Posted By IAMU, Tuesday, April 30, 2019

Falls are still the leading killer of workers doing construction activities and have been so for the past 20 years. To bring awareness to fall hazards and fall prevention, OHSA has partnered with other construction organizations and union groups to develop the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction.

For the past five years, employers, work organizations, unions, and other agencies have held conversations about correcting fall hazards and other workplace hazards to which employees have exposure.

This year, IAMU is taking part in the week-long stand-down by encouraging our members to conduct Toolbox Talks or other safety activities such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards.

Here are links to two ladder-related Toolbox Talks:

IAMU has ordered 1,000 hardhat stickers for members’ teams who participate. If you are interested in receiving stickers for your team, you may contact IAMU at 515.289.1999.

Lessons Learned - Safety Messages to Share with Others

Posted By IAMU, Tuesday, April 16, 2019

IAMU Safety Specialists hear about work-related injuries and near misses all the time. Often, injuries could have been or were avoided by following specific safety procedures and/or having the proper equipment.

To help share these teachable moments, IAMU Safety Specialist Margret Meade has created a new publication called “Lessons Learned.” The goal is to provide real-life examples of what can happen and what should happen when it comes to workplace safety.

The “Lessons Learned” highlight sheets will be available as downloadable PDFs. Feel free to print and post the highlight sheets in employee gathering areas, hand them out during employee meetings, and/ or distribute them electronically to others.

If you ever have any questions about the highlight sheets or have lessons to share for publication, you may contact Margret at mmeade@iamu.org or 515.289.1999. All individual and organization names will be removed before distribution.

To view and download the first “Lessons Learned” on Chainsaws and Kevlar, click here.

Be Sure to Register for the Trenching and Shoring Competent Person Workshop

Posted By IAMU, Tuesday, March 26, 2019

IAMU will hold a Trenching and Shoring Competent Person Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 11 at the IAMU Training and Office Complex.

OSHA requires a competent person be onsite at every excavation. The competent person is required to evaluate site safety and resolve existing and potential hazards.

This workshop is designed for city and utility employees and outside contractors employed by a city, or anyone working in a trenching and shoring situation.  It is an excellent opportunity to become qualified as a competent person (or stay current with the responsibilities).

The DNR has approved 0.6 CEUs for WD and WW only.

The training received will cover the overall requirements of the law, including:

  • Employee Safety
  • Dealing with traffic
  • Soil identification
  • Emergency equipment
  • Determining if shoring is needed
  • Proper methods of trenching and shoring

Contact the contractors that work for your city/utility and encourage them to register and attend.

For more information or to register - Click here.
