The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) has released the list of 2019 work-related fatalities that occurred in Iowa. Iowa saw 21 work-related deaths. This number just reflects the work-related deaths that IOSHA has jurisdiction over.

Workplace safety training is important and can make the difference between life and death in many incidences. If your workplace is not currently receiving safety training through IAMU, please feel free to contact Dave Hraha, IAMU Member Services Director, to learn how to get started. Make Plans to Attend an Iowa One Call Meeting

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, December 11, 2019

Iowa One Call is taking reservations for its January and March Excavation Safety Awareness Program around the state. There are 17 dates and locations from which to choose. The event is free.

For all meetings, registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch served at 12 p.m., and a presentation at 12:45 p.m. The meetings will close at 1:45 p.m. with a Q&A session and raffle drawing.

This year, event organizers will:

  • Provide an overview of Iowa One Call protocol
  • Focus on the importance of communication lines
  • Educate attendees on private facilities
  • Discuss best practices for communication between contractor and locating firms
  • Instruct on how to effectively use NextGen for accurate and timely locates.

For Iowa One Call to continue providing complimentary meals and door prizes at the meetings, all attendees who preregister for a meeting must commit to attending the meeting or provide advance notice of any foreseeable cancellations. Event organizers ask that organizations refrain from registering a large number of personnel if it is at all likely that some may not be able to attend. Additionally, all preregistered personnel should mark their calendars accordingly to avoid scheduling conflicts. Event organizers would appreciate at least two-weeks advance notice of any cancellations. If it is known at any time, however, that a pre-registrant is unable to attend, event organizers ask that you notify us as soon as possible.

Here is the Link to registration page.

The freezing temperatures and bitter-cold wind chills of winter weather pose safety issues similar to those faced during the summer heat.

Surprisingly, research shows that winter cold kills more Americans than heat. Of the 2,000 deaths that occur due to inclement weather each year, 63% are caused by cold and only 31% by heat. For eight tips to help you manage the challenges and dangers of hypothermia and frostbite, check out the EMC Loss Control Insights article.

The Iowa LTAP Work Zone Sign Package Program Open to Cities of Less Than 10K

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, November 6, 2019

The Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) has a Work Zone Sign Package Program that gives small cities in Iowa (less than 10,000 population) an opportunity to receive work zone signs and devices.

In the past, LTAP has only offered this package program to cities that had attended work zone safety training or other LTAP-sponsored events within the last three years. This year, the committee wanted to open the program to all cities in Iowa within the population range. This year, small cities that have taken work zone safety training, either through the Work Zone Safety Series or through IAMU, will receive bonus points on their applications.

For more information about this opportunity or to apply, go to https://iowaltap.iastate.edu/iowa-ltap-work-zone-sign-package-program/

The deadline to apply is Nov. 29, 2019.
