Fall is almost here and that means Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week are just around the corner. Each is celebrated the first week of October (October 2-8). Plan now so you won’t be scrambling in a month.
Public power utilities across the United States celebrate Public Power Week to help customers and stakeholders understand how they can better engage with their community-owned utility and benefit from all its offerings. American Public Power Association (APPA) member utilities can use the sample resources and templates to spread the word and help celebrate in your communities.
Public Natural Gas Week is a nationwide observance that offers the perfect opportunity for natural gas utilities to show their systems and generate enthusiasm about the benefits of public natural gas. American Public Gas Association (APGA) has developed sample materials to help APGA members celebrate the week in their communities.

March 18 is national Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day – a day set aside to honor this country’s natural gas utility workers. March 18 is the date of the New London, Texas, school explosion in 1937 that led to the widespread odorization of natural gas and an increased emphasis on safety. Safety is crucial to natural gas distribution, and the employees of distribution companies endeavor to make natural gas delivery as safe as possible. Please honor the natural gas utility workers in your community and at your system by celebrating on March 18. Natural gas utilities are encouraged to plan events, communication, social media posts, etc., to celebrate this important day. The APGA has various free resources available to help you celebrate this day. You can access them on the APGA website. There you will find: - A sample op-ed

March 18, 2020, is national Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day. In 2015, the American Public Gas Association (APGA) Marketing & Sales Committee began discussing how they believed natural gas utility workers deserved a day to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. After several months of planning, the committee named March 18 the day in which natural gas utility workers around the country will be honored each year.
The decision to hold this day on March 18 was made by a poll on the APGA Community. March 18 is the date of the New London, Texas school explosion in 1937 that led to the widespread odorization of natural gas and an increased emphasis on safety. Safety is a vital aspect to natural gas distribution and the employees of distribution companies endeavor to make natural gas delivery as safe as possible.
Please honor the natural gas utility workers in your community and at your system by celebrating on March 18. Natural gas utilities are encouraged to plan events, communication, social media posts, etc., to celebrate this very important day.
