OSHA
requires a competent person be on-site at every excavation. The
competent person is required to evaluate site safety and resolve
existing and potential hazards. This workshop is an excellent
opportunity to become qualified as a competent person (or stay current
with the responsibilities). *** 0.4 CEU's for WD & WW only *** For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.

 Registration
is open for the Transformer School for Electric Line Workers taught by
Scott Meinecke, Director of Safety & Loss Control for the Iowa
Association of Electric Cooperatives. This workshop is a
combination of classroom and hands-on learning opportunities, where
participants are exposed to situations that are as “real-world” as
possible, without the real-world risk or danger. During the workshop,
the following topics will include basics of single-phase and three-phase
transformer connections and theory including turns ratios, polarities,
safe work practices, basic calculations, connections, sizing, and
troubleshooting. Participants will work with energized miniature transformers.
The transformers will blow fuses to allow participants to experience
what happens when something is wired incorrectly. The class will
continue to build on the miniature transformer banks and allow
troubleshooting. Discussion on motor rotation as it relates to
three-phase systems as well as ways to prevent voltage surges while
switching three-phase bank. This workshop is beneficial for
anyone that is involved with the electric line crew including
apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other
departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to
those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge. For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.

Attention Water Members, the Annual Water Utility Day on the Hill at the
Iowa State Capitol is set for Monday, Jan. 29 from 11:30 a.m. until
1:30 p.m. IAMU will have a booth set up in the first floor rotunda area
during this time. Any water member is welcome to attend for any or
all of this awareness day event. It’s a great way to represent Iowa’s
municipal water utilities and connect with state lawmakers to make sure
they understand water-related issues. Stop by IAMU and day hello if you
do attend. You do not need to RSVP, but if you have any questions
about the event, you may contact IAMU Water Services Coordinator, Steve
Marsh at smarsh@iamu.org or by phone at 515.289.1999.
