APPA is holding its Spring Education Institute, April 25-29 in Minneapolis. At the Institute, we offer week-long tracks of in-depth classes that are designed to provide progressive training within the different subject areas. The Underground Distribution Systems classes are only held once a year in person, so this is a good opportunity for anyone who’s looking for that type of training. We also offer continuing education credits for participating in these events (CEUs, CPEs and PDHs). Tracks include: - Accounting
- Work Order & Asset Management Accounting
- Advanced Public Utility Accounting
- Financial Planning, Cost of Service & Rate Design
- Basic Cos of Service & Key Financial Concepts
- Strategic Rate Design: Trends and Distributed Generation Impacts
- Cost of Service Workshop
- Underground Distribution Systems
- Constructing, Operating, and Maintaining Underground Distribution Systems
- Advanced Underground Distribution Systems
Registration Discounts: Discounted early registration rates are in effect until April 4. If a utility has a group of five or more staff interested in a particular class, we can also provide group discounts. Registrants can contact Rachael Harb, APPA’s Education Specialist (RHarb@PublicPower.org or 202-467-2997) to get signed up or review the registration details and register online.

There will be an APPA webinar on Advanced Metering Infrastructure on November 18th, 2021, from 1PM-2PM CST. This webinar will
feature John Bilsten from Algona Municipal Utilities and will cover Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Insights.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) can get you a lot of great data, but what's the best way for small utilities to use it to make conclusions about their customers' behavior and rate classes?
Since 2016, Algona Municipal Utilities and Iowa State University’s Electric Power Research Center have collaborated to create a tool which summarizes very large AMI data sets into smaller, organized files with summary results, exporting analyses as tables and graphs. The latest version of the tool, which incorporates machine-learning and clustering techniques into its design, doesn’t just help define customer rate classes. The tool can set minimum demand definitions and identify customers whose usage may differ from their assigned rate class, offering utilities the opportunity to reassign or even redesign rate classes as needed. It puts power back in the hands of public power utilities by allowing them to check the accuracy of AMI analysis provided by billing and meter data management contractors.
During this webinar, researchers from ISU will share their work making in-house AMI analysis easier than ever through their ongoing partnership with Algona Municipal Utilities and the DEED Program. DEED members can check out this project's DEED Project Library page for more information on the tool.

One hundred twenty-nine utilities have earned the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2020. Three hundred twenty-nine utilities from across the country entered the annual Safety Awards. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker-hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records during 2020. Utilities’ incidence rate, used to judge entries, is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2020, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). “Utilities that receive an APPA Safety Award have demonstrated that they have made the health and safety of their employees a core value,” said Brandon Wylie, Chair of APPA’s Safety Committee and Director of Training & Safety at Electric Cities of Georgia. “Designing and maintaining a top-notch utility safety program takes a lot of hard work and commitment. These utilities and their communities should be very proud.” The Safety Awards have been held annually for more than 65 years. A complete list of winners is available HERE.
