You
probably have received the yellow memo from the EPA which states all
Community Water Supplies must develop a Lead Service Line Inventory and
submit it to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR) . The
inventories are due October, 16, 2024. The good news is that you have
over a year from now to work on this, the bad news is that it is a BIG
undertaking. IAMU is here to help explain some of the questions you
might have and provide guidance, so you can get it done before the
deadline.
Why do we need to do a Lead Service Inventory? To
assess the extent of lead service lines in your community, Identify
better sampling locations, begin planning for Lead service Line
replacement which includes applying for state and federal grants (The
BIL Bipartisan infrastructure Law provides 15 Billion for lead service
line replacement) and, Its required by the EPA.
IAMU is here to assist with any questions you might have. You can email us at leadserviceline@IAMU.org or call (515) 289-5203. We also have a FAQ page here for beginning the inventory. (link to FAQ Sheet) If you haven’t done so, download the appropriate template for your municipality and take a look at it.
If
you are a system who has less than 10,000 service lines, please use the
Iowa Lead Service Line Inventory Small File (3,5 MB). If you are a
system who has 10,000 or more service lines, please use the Iowa Lead
Service Line Inventory Large File (57.7 MB). The Iowa Lead Service Line
Large File (57.7 MB) may take a few minutes to download.
Please email LCRR@dnr.iowa.gov if you are unable to open the Excel file.

Preston Kizer just joined the team as a Water Services Specialist on Tuesday, May 30. Preston
received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental Science from
Central College in Pella, Iowa. His most recent employer was Eurofins
Environment Testing Northcentral in Cedar Falls, Iowa. While at
Eurofins, Preston worked as a Project Manager Assistant and Sample
Control Technician. Preston spent a couple summers as a Water
Chemist/Environmental Engineer Intern at LabStrong. These internships
allowed Preston to work closely with engineers to develop and build a
working prototype for water conservation, along with conducting water
chemistry tests. Preston just moved to the metro for the job here at IAMU. We
look forward to Preston providing guidance to our members and water
systems throughout Iowa as we begin new initiatives to further promote
and protect safe water in our state. Please stop by the next time you are in the office to introduce yourself and welcome him to IAMU.

This course will once again be presented by Skip Collier of Professional Training Systems, Inc. Skip is highly regarded and has an extensive background in electric utility design, construction, maintenance, and operation. The
EUSO Short Course is designed for any employee whose job performance
will benefit from a basic understanding of the operations side of the
business. This includes those from legal, rates, engineering,
purchasing, computer application, marketing, customer service, inventory
control, finance, accounting, safety, risk analysis as well as those
from generating plants. One goal for this class is to have students
leave with the ability to easily identify all of the electrical
equipment they see in a substation as they walk by, along with all the
equipment found on the poles in a residential area. Non-electrical
engineers are often at a disadvantage in the electric utility
environment due to a lack of familiarity with technical issues. The
better you understand the utility’s product – electrical energy – and
how it is created and distributed, the better you can serve the utility
and your customers. This course assumes no electrical background, and builds on the basics to provide a comprehensive understanding of the equipment and operations. *** Line Maintainer apprentices will receive 21 Basic OJT hours for taking the EUSO Course ***For additional information in regards to the workshop, including full agenda and registration, please click HERE.Questions? Article written by Jim Frederick & the U.S. Department of Labor With temperatures rising as we head into the summer months, so does the risk of heat hazards. In 2019, exposure to heat led to 43 work-related deaths
and 2,410 injuries and illnesses, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has
resources to help employers and workers beat the heat and stay healthy
and safe. CLICK HERE to read about some practices to remember as you prepare for the summer heat.
