Get the Lead Out - Lead Service Line Inventory

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, July 12, 2023
Picture

All community water supplies must develop a Lead Service Line Inventory and submit it to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR). The inventories are due October 16, 2024.  IAMU has dedicated staff to help you understand the process and answer questions you might have.

Why do we need to do a Lead Service Inventory?  To assess the extent of lead service lines in your community, identify better sampling locations, begin planning for Lead service Line replacement which includes applying for state and federal grants (The BIL Bipartisan infrastructure Law provides 15 Billion for lead service line replacement) and, it’s required by the EPA.

The EPA has posted more helpful information on their website recently. Here are links to some resources that you might find helpful.

Revised Lead and Copper Rule: https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/revised-lead-and-copper-rule

Small Entity Compliance Guide: https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2023-06/Final%20Small%20System%20Entity%20Inventory%20Guide_508.pdf

New Fact Sheet: https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2023-06/EPA-Factsheet-Combined-06072023%20508-final.pdf

If you haven’t done so already, download the appropriate template for your municipality and take a look at it.

If you are a system who has less than 10,000 service lines, please use the Iowa Lead Service Line Inventory Small File (3,5 MB).  If you are a system who has 10,000 or more service lines, please use the Iowa Lead Service Line Inventory Large File (57.7 MB).  The Iowa Lead Service Line Large File (57.7 MB) may take a few minutes to download.

Please email LCRR@dnr.iowa.gov if you are unable to open the Excel file.

Lead Service Inventory

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, June 7, 2023

Picture You probably have received the yellow memo from the EPA which states all Community Water Supplies must develop a Lead Service Line Inventory and submit it to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR) . The inventories are due October, 16, 2024.  The good news is that you have over a year from now to work on this, the bad news is that it is a BIG undertaking.  IAMU is here to help explain some of the questions you might have and provide guidance, so you can get it done before the deadline.

Why do we need to do a Lead Service Inventory?  To assess the extent of lead service lines in your community, Identify better sampling locations, begin planning for Lead service Line replacement which includes applying for state and federal grants (The BIL Bipartisan infrastructure Law provides 15 Billion for lead service line replacement) and, Its required by the EPA.

We also have a FAQ page here for beginning the inventory. (link to FAQ Sheet)

New Water Services Specialist - Preston Kizer

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, June 7, 2023
Picture Preston Kizer just joined the team as a Water Services Specialist on Tuesday, May 30.

Preston received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental Science from Central College in Pella, Iowa.  His most recent employer was Eurofins Environment Testing Northcentral in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  While at Eurofins, Preston worked as a Project Manager Assistant and Sample Control Technician. Preston spent a couple summers as a Water Chemist/Environmental Engineer Intern at LabStrong.  These internships allowed Preston to work closely with engineers to develop and build a working prototype for water conservation, along with conducting water chemistry tests.
Preston just moved to the metro for the job here at IAMU.

We look forward to Preston providing guidance to our members and water systems throughout Iowa as we begin new initiatives to further promote and protect safe water in our state.

Please stop by the next time you are in the office to introduce yourself and welcome him to IAMU.
