Energy Trends Workshop: Elevating the Energy Conversation

Posted By IAMU, Thursday, April 13, 2023
Picture
After a successful inaugural event in 2022, the Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC), in partnership with the Iowa Association for Energy Efficiency (IAEE), will hold the second annual Energy Trends Workshop.

With the need for residents and businesses to reduce their use of fossil fuels sooner rather than later, this one-day workshop focuses on current and future energy trends in Iowa. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from and network with energy experts, consultants, industry professionals and government agencies with the goal of elevating the energy conversation in Iowa. Past attendees noted they “...really enjoyed this event…” and “...received a number of calls and emails after the event to connect and share additional information.”

The event will open with Keynote Speaker Robert Bryce. Mr. Bryce is the host of the Power Hungry Podcast and has been writing about energy, power, innovation and politics for more than 30 years. The author, journalist, and film producer will present on “Renewable dreams, hydrocarbon realities and the real fuels of the future”. Breakout sessions will occur throughout the day.

Date: Thursday, May 4
Time: 8:15 am - 4:00 pm (Registration opens at 8:15 am)

More Opportunities for EV Charging Grants: CFI Program

Posted By IAMU, Thursday, April 13, 2023
The CFI program is a new competitive grant program created to strategically deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle charging and alternative fueling infrastructure to communities, in addition to along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). CFI Program investments aim to increase infrastructure accessible to drivers of electric, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas vehicles. This program provides two funding categories of grants: (1) Community Charging and Fueling Grants (Community Program); and (2) Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants (Corridor Program). This first round of funding makes $700 million of funding available to deploy infrastructure projects in urban and rural communities in publicly accessible locations, including downtown areas and local neighborhoods, particularly in underserved and disadvantaged communities. Eligible applicants include but are not limited to state government entities, city and county governments, public universities, metropolitan planning organizations, etc. The application deadline for this round is May 30, 2023. The link to more information about this opportunity is: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/cfi/

$350M – Community Charging and Fueling Program Grants (Community Program)

Strategically deploy electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, hydrogen fueling infrastructure, propane fueling infrastructure (MD/HD ONLY) , and natural gas fueling infrastructure located on public roads or in other publicly accessible locations. Projects expanding access to charging and fueling infrastructure in rural areas, low- and-moderate income neighborhoods, and communities with a low ratio of private parking spaces to households or a high ratio of multiunit dwellings to single family homes shall be prioritized. Inclusion of a “dig once” philosophy to maximize the societal and economic benefits of a project while minimizing the cost and disruption of construction by considering and installing for current needs and as many of the reasonably foreseeable future needs, as practicable.
  • Located on any public road or in other publicly accessible locations, such as parking facilities at public buildings, public schools, and public parks, or in publicly accessible parking facilities owned or managed by a private entity.
  • Must be publicly accessible.
  • May use funds to contract with a private entity.
  • Minimum award amount of $500,000, maximum award amount of $15 million.
  • Must address environmental justice.
  • Expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to expand or fill gaps in access to publicly accessible infrastructure.
  • Must be accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.

$350M – Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants (Corridor Program)

Strategically deploy charging and alternative fueling infrastructure located along designated alternative fuel corridors.
  • Located along a designated AFC; EV charging within 1 mile and other alternative fuels within 5 miles of the AFC.
  • Must be publicly accessible.
  • Minimum award amount of ~$1 million, no maximum award amount.
  • Must use funds to contract with a private entity.
  • Must address environmental justice.

DOE Announces Investment of $315 Million to Advance Reliable Clean Energy in Rural or Remote Communities

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, March 8, 2023

This week, the Biden-Harris Administration, through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announced $300 million for projects that increase energy affordability and promote climate resilience and $15 million for a prize competition to help rural communities build the capacity needed for clean energy development and deployment. These two new funding opportunities are a critical component of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-funded Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA) program, which aims to improve the resilience, reliability, and affordability of energy systems in communities across the country with 10,000 or fewer people.

Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas
A $300 million funding opportunity will award projects that increase energy affordability and promote climate resilience with an anticipated federal cost share ranging from $5 to $100 million per project. DOE seeks to provide equal opportunity to qualified applicants and enable potential replication in rural and remote communities across the nation.

The Energizing Rural Communities Prize

DOE is also launching the Energizing Rural Communities Prize to support capacity building to remove two of the biggest barriers to improving energy systems in rural or remote areas: developing necessary partnerships and securing financing. Through $15 million in funding, this prize competition will help build partnerships by connecting communities to government funding and a network of partners that can help implement clean energy projects.

View the full funding opportunity and register to apply on OCED Exchange. Concept papers are due by April 14, 2023, and full applications are due by June 28, 2023.
Read more about the Energizing Rural Communities Prize. Full applications are due by May 24, 2023.
