The Denison Municipal Utilities (DMU) was glad to host the Denison High School Academic Decathlon team. DMU staff recently provided them with a tour of the water and Wastewater treatment plants. The Denison High School participates in the Iowa Academic Decathlon. Iowa Academic Decathlon, a division of United States Academic DecathlonR, is an academic competition comprised of ten events. Students from large and small schools around the state compete for awards, advancement, and scholarships. Preparation usually begins in August at the beginning of the school year and continues through the scrimmage in December, regional competition in January, state competition in March, and national competition in April.

Denison Municipal Utilities (DMU) recently signed a construction contract with John T. Jones Construction of Fargo, ND, for a major maintenance and construction project at the DMU Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The project will make significant improvements to the DMU facility to increase the facility’s operational efficiencies as Denison’s population continues to grow, local industries expand, and new businesses are welcomed to the community. The project will be contained within the current footprint of the wastewater treatment facility. Some of the more significant improvements include:
- Replacing a 40-year-old lift station that takes in all of the City's domestic flow
- Capacity upgrades to the activated sludge process, including 750,000-gallon anoxic basins for nutrient removal
- Remodel Lab Control building constructed in the early 1980s
- Upgrade the force main river crossing to the WWTP
- Installing a fiber ring for SCADA automated controls for maximum plant operation efficiencies
- Efficiency upgrades to aerobic digesters constructed in the early 1980s
- Demolishing older, inefficient WWTP processes
- Constructing two covered anaerobic lagoons with a 13-million-gallon operating capacity
DMU is pleased to also announce that the project’s timing will coincide with major wastewater treatment improvements for Smithfield Foods. By coordinating the projects, DMU and Smithfield were able to partner on the construction contract for monetary and mobilization efficiencies. This project will enhance the partnership that DMU has built with all residential, commercial, and industrial customers over the 100-plus years of providing sanitary sewer service to the community.
The initial project fieldwork started shortly after a preconstruction meeting held May 16. The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by March 2020.

Denison Municipal Utilities (DMU) selected RJN Group, Inc., to begin a wet-weather flow reduction program in Denison’s sanitary sewer system. This initial project will provide flow monitoring services that will determine the amount of rain and groundwater infiltration and inflow entering the utility’s sewer collection system and support the ongoing sewer rehabilitation efforts. RJN will evaluate inflow and infiltration (I/I) through flow monitoring with the use of 15 flow meters and three rain gauges.
I/I is a problem as it can cause basement sewage backups, sewer overflows, excess pumping, storage, and treatment issues for the wastewater treatment plant. Flow monitoring will identify areas within the city where excess flow is most prevalent, allowing DMU to address these areas proactively.
After processing the data collected, results will yield a comprehensive report, prioritizing where rehabilitation measures will improve the Denison collection system. Recommendations on implementing further studies, including SSES inspections or hydraulic modeling, will also be suggested. The flow monitoring program will help the utility prioritize areas for rehabilitation to ensure funds are spent in a cost-effective manner. Scheduled to begin this spring, the flow monitors will remain in place for 12 weeks.
