The American Public Power Association (APPA) has partnered with Nissan to offer its member public power community across the U.S. exclusive rebates on the all-electric 2019 Nissan LEAF. At members’ request, the APPA has sought out partnerships with vehicle manufacturers for a national rebate program. The APPA is excited to bring this opportunity to its members, and to work with Nissan North America, which has successfully worked with similarly situated organizations.
Public power customers and employees are eligible for a rebate of $3,500 on the 2019 Nissan LEAF 40 kWh Standard and of $2,500 on the 2019 Nissan LEAF 62 kWh ePlus.
Utilities, joint action agencies and state/regional associations may use the rebate for fleet vehicles. The rebate on the LEAF 40 kWh Standard for fleet vehicles may be up to $5,000 in ZEV states. Ask your local dealer.
To claim the public power rebate, public power customers must download this flyer (updated 10/2/2019) and take it to a local Nissan dealer, along with proof of eligible residency and a current electric bill.
Extended: Nissan has extended the rebate offer through to January 2, 2020.

September 30 is the deadline to apply for a prestigious Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation from the American Public Power Association.
Being recognized with the RP3 designation can lead to:
- Increased customer support
- National and local media attention
- Enhanced teamwork
- Potential financial perks, such as improved bond ratings, savings on insurance premiums, and increased economic development opportunities
The APPA’s RP3 program is based on industry-recognized leading practices in four important disciplines:
- Reliability
- Safety
- Workforce Development
- System Improvement
Being recognized by the RP3 program demonstrates to community leaders, governing board members, suppliers, and service providers a utility’s commitment to its employees, customers, and community. Additionally, an RP3 designation is a sign of a utility’s dedication to operating an efficient, safe, and reliable distribution system. Currently 274 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities hold an RP3 designation. An RP3 designation recognizes the utility for providing its community with high quality, reliable, and safe electricity.
First-time RP3 applicants save 15% on their application fee by using this code at checkout: JAA&SA2019RP3.

The American Public Power Association (APPA) wanted to alert members that a company has been contacting attendees of APPA’s events and offering assistance with hotel reservations (specifically for the 2020 National Conference in Long Beach, but they may reach out about other events).
An APPA member was contacted via email from a company calling itself “Conventioneers, LLC,” with a promotion code and links purportedly to make reservations at various hotels in Long Beach.
This company is not affiliated with APPA and does not represent the organization. Please do NOT make hotel reservations through this third party or any third party claiming to work with the APPA on hotel room blocks. If they call or email you, do not respond. It might be a scam.
APPA works hard to negotiate discounted room blocks at hotels for all of its conferences and when you reserve from these blocks, it helps the APPA to keep conference rates affordable for you. APPA never contracts with third parties to sell these rooms to you.
Please remember to only use the online reservation links, phone numbers and codes available on the APPA website for each conference or event under the “Hotel” tab.
If you are planning to attend the 2020 National Conference, please note that registration and the hotel room block will open in January. Information will be posted at www.PublicPower.org/NationalConference when it opens.
If you have any questions, please email us at EducationInfo@PublicPower.org, or call the APPA at 202.467-2900.

As the country continues to watch the path of Hurricane Dorian, the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) continues to participate in daily conference calls through the American Public Power Association’s Mutual Aid Working Group. Municipal electric utilities across Florida and other parts of the Southeast put out a call for mutual aid ahead of the impending storm, and IAMU has members on stand-by to deploy if help is needed.
The Iowa crews that offered to respond with eight total electric lineworkers and equipment were from the following systems:
- Sioux Center Municipal Utilities
- Sibley Municipal Utilities
- Muscatine Power and Water
- Eldridge Electric Utility
IAMU and the volunteering utilities will continue to monitor the storm and deploy if need be. If no assistance is needed, the volunteering utilities will eventually be released.
We are still early in the hurricane season. There likely will be more events for which IAMU will reach out to members, asking for assistance.
