Mikaela Burma Joins Vantage Point Solutions as Manager of Legal and Regulatory

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, April 3, 2019

Vantage Point Solutions is pleased to announce the hiring of Mikaela Burma, JD, who has joined the Vantage Point team as Manager of Legal and Regulatory. Burma assumed her duties March 18, assisting VPS telecom and broadband clients with regulatory and legal matters.

“Mikaela has great legal skills in contract drafting and review, negotiations, great regulatory and research skills and has managed complex cases,” said Doug Eidahl, JD, Vice President of Legal and Regulatory. “We are very happy to have her on board.”

Kristy Szabo, Director of Consulting, agrees. “She is a great addition to the Vantage Point legal team and is ready to assist Vantage Point’s clients with regulatory and legal questions, as well as acquisitions, carrier disputes and FCC comments.”

Burma brings a variety of legal experience to Vantage Point, having previously served as a judicial law clerk and as a financial crimes specialist. Most recently, she served as a Claims Counsel/Specialist for CNA Surety.

Burma works alongside two additional full-time licensed attorneys in Vantage Point’s growing and leading Consulting department. Together, these three attorneys provide a great depth of legal expertise for the increasingly complex and competitive business environments in which VPS’ clients operate. In addition to legal guidance, Vantage Point’s Consulting team is particularly known for it’s strategic, financial, regulatory, and operational expertise in advising clients. In fact, in 2018 the team led clients to securing over $165 million in the Connect America Fund Auction 903 (“CAF II Auction”).

Burma earned her JD from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis and is a member of the State Bar of South Dakota. She will split her time between her home in Sioux Falls, SD and Vantage Point headquarters in Mitchell, SD.

Ready for the FLSA Overtime Rule?

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, March 27, 2019

The rule will make significant changes to classification

On March 7, 2019, the Department of Labor issued the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the Final FLSA Overtime Rule. It was put on hold in December 2016 by a nationwide injunction.

What changes to “white-collar exemptions” will apply?
  • What do the Final Rule revisions mean for employers?
  • How will the Final Rule change classification for your current employees?
  • What impact will the changes have on overtime expenses?
  • What are the proper methods for classifying employees?

Discover answers to these questions and additional information at an upcoming webinar:

Be Sure to Register for the Trenching and Shoring Competent Person Workshop

Posted By IAMU, Tuesday, March 26, 2019

IAMU will hold a Trenching and Shoring Competent Person Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 11 at the IAMU Training and Office Complex.

OSHA requires a competent person be onsite at every excavation. The competent person is required to evaluate site safety and resolve existing and potential hazards.

This workshop is designed for city and utility employees and outside contractors employed by a city, or anyone working in a trenching and shoring situation.  It is an excellent opportunity to become qualified as a competent person (or stay current with the responsibilities).

The DNR has approved 0.6 CEUs for WD and WW only.

The training received will cover the overall requirements of the law, including:

  • Employee Safety
  • Dealing with traffic
  • Soil identification
  • Emergency equipment
  • Determining if shoring is needed
  • Proper methods of trenching and shoring

Contact the contractors that work for your city/utility and encourage them to register and attend.
