The IAMU Business and Finance Conference, including our Annual Business Meeting, is just around the corner. The registration deadline is this Friday, January 27. To register, click here.
The conference will take place February 7 – 8, 2017, at the Holiday Inn & Suites West Des Moines – Jordan Creek. Get ready to be inspired, informed, and entertained.

This year’s conference includes a motivational presentation by Chad Pregracke, President and Founder of Living Lands & Waters, the world’s only “industrial strength” not-for-profit river cleanup organization that has removed more than 7 million pounds of garbage from our nation’s rivers.
Then, we’ve lined up a list of speakers to discuss timely topics relevant to the business and finance operations of municipal utilities. You’ll learn about:
- Regulating Social Media in the Workplace
- Conflict Resolution in the Workplace
- What’s Happening in the Legislature
- Energy of the Future
- Insurance Claim Trends
- Easy Ways to Communicate with Customers
You won’t want to miss the Legislative Reception and the Annual IAMU Business Meeting, either. The IAMU team can’t wait to see you there. For any questions, contact Jen Cronin at jcronin@iamu.org.

The 2017 Broadband Conference will be Wednesday, March 22nd and Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at the same location as last year, the Holiday Inn and Suites on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines. Registration for vendors interested in an exhibit table or sponsorship is now open.
We’ve made some changes to the program that are sure to delight both attendees and participating vendors. Most importantly, all of the vendor tables will be in the same room this year rather than spread around several locations. That should vastly improve traffic flow and give all vendors a chance to be seen. Secondly, the vendor hospitality suites will all be on first floor guest suites adjacent to each other, meaning attendees won’t have to travel multiple floors to network with friends and vendors.
There are several marketing opportunities for companies that provide telecommunications products and services. Vendor tabletop exhibits are $350 for IAMU Associate Members and $550 for non-members. There are also sponsorships available for meals, breaks, and the vendor reception on March 22nd. For complete details and pricing, see the Vendor Exhibit Flyer on the IAMU website. To register, please click here.

From hearing the latest on regulatory issues and predictions about the future to getting advice on customer relations, IAMU’s 4th Annual Energy Conference, held Nov. 29 – 30 at Prairie Meadows Event Center, provided more than 60 attendees with valuable insight into how to provide their communities with the best, safest, most affordable energy solutions possible.
Public utilities play a crucial role in the nation’s livelihood. Those who provide services have an honor and responsibility, some of the presenters stressed.
“We are the lifeblood of our country,” Bert Kalisch, president and CEO of the American Public Gas Association, told attendees.
Here are just a few of the highlights from this year’s conference:
- Third-Party Solar Generation: Communities may want to develop a standard interconnection application, develop interconnection policies and procedures, and offer a single point of contact for interested groups and customers.
- Public/Media Relations: Utilities should seek to inform and educate their communities about what utilities provide, what challenges they face, and what opportunities lie ahead. This means reaching out to local media to “tell your story.”
- Customer Relations: Utilities should gather feedback from their customers to understand their perceptions of the utilities, and what customers may want and need. Utilities can find out what’s on the minds of their customers by conducting surveys, holding focus groups, and providing channels (such as a designated email address and/or social media) for customers to share their comments, questions, and concerns.
In addition to taking in the many informative presentations, attendees also were able to connect with more than 25 vendors and network with colleagues from across the state. Thanks to everyone who attended this year’s Energy Conference. See you all next year.
