The
basic design on which all modern spring tape measures are built can
trace its origins back to an 1864 patent by a Meriden, Connecticut
resident named William H. Bangs Jr. According to the text of his patent,
Bang's tape measure was an improvement on other versions previously
designed. Figure 1 below.
The
spring tape measure has existed in the U.S. since Bang's patent in
1864, but its usage did not become very popular due to the difficulty in
communication from one town to another and the expense of the tape
measure. In the late 1920s, carpenters began slowly adopting H. A.
Farrand's design is the one more commonly used. Farrand's new design was
a concave/convex tape made of metal which would stand straight out a
distance of four to six feet. This design is the basis for most modern
pocket tape measures used today. Source: Wikipedia

the next IEC board meeting, The Iowa Energy Center board are planning
to have a transportation focus, including some presentations and vehicle
displays. Attendance is free, and there is no registration, however if
you would like to show off your alternative or electric fuel vehicle,
please email Abbie Christophersen at abbie.christophersen@iowaeda.com.
E-85, Biodiesel, electric, CNG – all fuels will be welcome. MidAmerican
Energy will be bringing an all-electric bucket truck, which could be of
interest to IAMU members. The Energy Center will have food trucks as
well if you want to grab a bite to eat. This event will start around
11AM on August 10th, the board meeting will start at 1PM.

Dave
Swanson, IAMU Safety Specialist, and Margret Meade, IAMU Safety
Outreach Coordinator, were in Milan, IL on June 19th and 20th conducting
mobile crane practical evalua tions for Brandt Construction. Brandt
Construction is a large general contractor that also designs and
performs heavy civil engineering projects such as bridge and utility
system construction. Six employees, including one of the principal
owners, have been successfully certified through our NCCER Mobile Crane
course.
