Registration is open for the Transformer School for Electric Line Workers taught by Scott Meinecke, Director of Safety & Loss Control for the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.

This workshop is a combination of classroom and hands-on learning opportunities, where participants are exposed to situations that are as “real-world” as possible, without the real-world risk or danger. During the workshop, the following topics will include basics of single-phase and three-phase transformer connections and theory including turns ratios, polarities, safe work practices, basic calculations, connections, sizing, and troubleshooting. Participants will work with energized miniature transformers. The transformers will blow fuses to allow participants to experience what happens when something is wired incorrectly. The class will continue to build on the miniature transformer banks and allow troubleshooting. Discussion on motor rotation as it relates to three-phase systems as well as ways to prevent voltage surges while switching three-phase bank.

This workshop is beneficial for anyone that is involved with the electric line crew including apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge.

Class attendees will be required to bring their own personal protective equipment, including:

  • Arc Flash Shield & Hard hat
  • Safety Glasses
  • Secondary Rubber Gloves
  • Appropriate Footwear
  • Volt / Amp Meter
  • Calculator
  • Notebook / Pen / Pencil

Transformer School for Electric Line Workers - December 18th - 20th

Posted By IAMU, Wednesday, November 28, 2018

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer our Transformer School for line workers. The Transformer School will focus on single-phase and three-phase transformer connections and theory.

Participants will be challenged by the course instruction and hands-on station work that can benefit any utility. The various stations are designed to simulate “real world” scenarios, without the real-world dangers. Working individually and in small groups, participants will benefit by understanding, building, examining, and collaborating to further develop troubleshooting methods that can help maintain your utility’s reliability. A certificate of achievement will be provided showing the hours of attendance acquired. Certificates will be emailed after the course.

The School will take place Tuesday, Dec. 18 through Thursday, Dec. 20 at the IAMU Training & Office Complex in Ankeny.

To register for the School, click here.

For more information, contact Dan Llewellyn, Electric Services Coordinator at dllewellyn@iamu.org or by phone at 515.289.1999.
