Last week during the 51st annual Iowa Governors Safety & Health Conference held in Altoona; Jim Silvers was honored. Jim worked in the safety profession for 35 years in the state of Iowa. He worked for the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, Iowa Illinois Safety Council, Hach Company, and the Pella Corporation. He was affiliated with several community-based organizations.
His wife, Maria, and son, Jordan, attended the awards ceremony to remember Jim and his passion for safety and care for others. We lost Jim in January of this year. He was an avid Iowa State University fan since his son went to ISU. IAMU staff collected funds to offer a one-time $1,000 safety scholarship to an ISU safety student. Tavion Yrjo was the winner of the scholarship and was very grateful. He has been working on virtual reality (VR) technology to enhance employee safety, knowledge retention, and risk assessment skills.

This mid-day workshop will help utilities and independent power producers plan strategically for the future and apply engineering economic principles when making decisions about new sources of renewable power and new transmission lines. The purpose of the workshop is to explore the fundamentals behind making economic decisions to purchase new sources of generation and build new transmission lines. Multiple IAMU employees attended the previous SWEEET workshop in 2021, and would highly recommend any IAMU members attend this event who are interested in generation and transmission projects. This workshop will focus on solving real-world problems in electricity planning. The workshop will explore the following topics: - Introduction of Excel tool with newly designed user interface to calculate optimal power flow
- Real options for new sources of generation and additional transmission capacity
- A farmer’s decision to lease land for a wind turbine and the influence of risk aversion on the farmer’s decision
This workshop will be held on Monday, August 8, 2022 from 10 am – 2 pm in 2004 Black Engineering, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Lunch will be provided. Click HERE for a workshop agenda and more information about this event. Registration: There is no registration fee, but registration prior to the workshop is required. To register, please send your name, affiliation, and email to Cameron MacKenzie, 515-294-6283, camacken@iastate.edu.

There will be an APPA webinar on Advanced Metering Infrastructure on November 18th, 2021, from 1PM-2PM CST. This webinar will
feature John Bilsten from Algona Municipal Utilities and will cover Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Insights.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) can get you a lot of great data, but what's the best way for small utilities to use it to make conclusions about their customers' behavior and rate classes?
Since 2016, Algona Municipal Utilities and Iowa State University’s Electric Power Research Center have collaborated to create a tool which summarizes very large AMI data sets into smaller, organized files with summary results, exporting analyses as tables and graphs. The latest version of the tool, which incorporates machine-learning and clustering techniques into its design, doesn’t just help define customer rate classes. The tool can set minimum demand definitions and identify customers whose usage may differ from their assigned rate class, offering utilities the opportunity to reassign or even redesign rate classes as needed. It puts power back in the hands of public power utilities by allowing them to check the accuracy of AMI analysis provided by billing and meter data management contractors.
During this webinar, researchers from ISU will share their work making in-house AMI analysis easier than ever through their ongoing partnership with Algona Municipal Utilities and the DEED Program. DEED members can check out this project's DEED Project Library page for more information on the tool.
Recommended For
Any public power system which gathers AMI or SCADA data.
Rates
- DEED members: Free
- APPA members: $109
- Non-members: $209

This day-long workshop will help utilities and independent power producers plan strategically for the future and apply engineering economic principles when making decisions about new sources of renewable power and new transmission lines. Jeff Gorrie, Director of Energy Services at IAMU will be attending, and is encouraging municipal utilities to join for this free learning event. More information is listed below: What: The purpose of this workshop is to explore the fundamentals behind making economic decisions to purchase new sources of generation and build new transmission lines. Planning for the future of Iowa electricity involves substantial uncertainty, including the future demand for electricity, possible carbon emission limits, requirements to use renewable resources, generation capabilities and efficiencies of new technologies, and the cost of different sources of generation. Incorporating these and other uncertainties into a utility’s planning and making good economic decisions in the midst of these uncertainties are challenging. The workshop will focus on solving real-world problems in electricity planning. The workshop will specifically explore the following topics: - Knowing when and under what conditions new sources of energy should be installed
- Valuing new energy sources
- Managing risk, especially financial risk, for an electric utility
- Understanding how a utility’s risk attitude (e.g., risk aversion) should impact the utility’s risk management decisions and valuation of new energy sources
The workshop will be designed to be interactive. The workshop will show how Excel can be used to solve for the optimal power flow in an electric bus network. Participants will be provided with Excel workbooks that they can use to calculate the optimal power flow that minimizes total generation cost. When: Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 10 am – 4 pm. Break with snacks and lunch will be provided. Where: Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa (exact location TBD) Workshop Facilitators: K. Jo Min and Cameron MacKenzie, professors in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University Registration: There is no registration fee, but registration prior to the workshop is required. To register, please send your name, affiliation, and email to Cameron MacKenzie, 515-294-6283, camacken@iastate.edu. This workshop is sponsored by the Iowa Energy Center. For further information, please contact Cameron or view www.imse.iastate.edu/sweeet (SWEEET’s designated Web page). Who: Electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, independent power producers, investor-owned utilities, and any member of Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities and Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.
