Special Project Assistant

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Special Project Assistant.

Duties and responsibilities – Research, collect, compile and analyze data on municipal utilities in Iowa including financial statements, audits, and public budgets in order to produce an economic impact report.

Requirements and qualifications – Well qualified applicants will have or be working toward a degree in economics, statistics, business, accounting, finance, or public administration or a related field and demonstrate the ability to understand utility industry and municipal financial statements.

Salary – IAMU will offer an hourly rate of $15/hr.

Schedule and duration – IAMU seeks to complete the project as soon as possible.

IAMU is a trade association representing city-owned utility systems including 541 water utilities, 136 electric utilities, 51 gas utilities, and 25 telecommunications utilities. IAMU’s campus is located in Ankeny, Iowa.

Electric Services Coordinator

Background

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is seeking a knowledgeable professional to provide training, support, and serve as a resource to its 136 municipal electric utility members. IAMU is a trade association serving cities that operate electric, gas, water and/or broadband utilities in Iowa. The association’s 25-acre state-of-the-art training & office complex includes an 11-acre Safety and Training Field.

 

Job Summary
Direct management responsibilities of the Electric Services department that includes, but not limited to the IAMU apprenticeship program, workshop development and organization, training, developing/customizing written plans and processes for IOSHA and IUB compliance, site assessments; assisting members to comply with regulations.   Representing IAMU in public appearances; working with IAMU staff members on matters of common concern; and, performing such other duties as deemed appropriate. 

Minimum Qualifications

Electrical or business-related two or four-year college degree or equivalent safety and management experience in area of safety and power line work. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written required. Customer service skills demonstrating an ability to listen, understand and respond to external and internal customers’ needs in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, demonstrated experience in detail oriented tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy, analytical and problem-solving skills required.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with various staff with multiple deadlines.
  • Team player with passion, drive and the ability to self-start and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to obtain an Iowa CDL and to operate a motor vehicle and other heavy equipment. Some travel is required.
  • Be able to attain any license, certificate or endorsement that might be required for the position, at IAMU's expenses.
  • Plan and facilitate instruction and implement electric training workshops and safety training programs for members, in compliance with regulations issued under OSHA, DOT, EPA, NESC and others.
  • Serve as a resource for electric utility members in matters related to overhead and underground distribution, transmission, metering, and substation operation.
  • Help administer and maintain the apprenticeship programs, which includes hands-on training evaluations.
  • Visit member utilities and participate in accident investigation and inspections, if requested.
  • Serve as an advocate for municipal electric utilities in Iowa.
  • Knowledge associated with electric energy and safety and health matters.
  • Ability to perform a variety of computer functions along with audio / visual equipment. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Pushing

Push down up to 200 pounds with preferred or both feet for digging. Push and pull up to 100 pounds at heights from floor to 55 inches to use hot stick.

Pulling

Push/pull up to 300 pounds at 0 inches to 48 inches to load transformers onto cart (2-person task).

Climbing

Climb up to 12 steps ranging from 12 inches to 22 inches to get in/out of equipment, use ladders or climb distribution poles. May also wear 25-pound tool belt during tasks.

Reaching

Reach up to 24 inches bilaterally in various positions, including prone, to access work areas.

Gripping

Grip up to 75 pounds bilaterally to use hand tools and crimp wires.

Pinching

Pinch up to 10 pounds with preferred hand to handle small parts and equipment.

Low-level Activity

Low level activity for up to 15 minutes at a time to operate equipment or access work areas.

Hand Coordination

Hand coordination bilaterally to write, type, use mouse, and handle paperwork and in various positions from low level to above shoulder to operate equipment controls, use handle tools, and handle wire.

 

Salary commensurate with experience.  On occasion, duties will require more than 40-hours a week, Rarely, duties may require evening or weekend work. Limited overnight or out of state travel. Position is based in the IAMU offices on the south side of Ankeny.
