APPA is a member of the Utility Health Sciences Group (UHSG), an organization that provides materials to assist its members in addressing EMF (electric and magnetic fields; electromagnetic fields) issues. As part of your utility’s APPA membership, we provide access to UHSG’s materials on EMF.
Electric and magnetic / electromagnetic fields exist around electrically powered devices in the same way that the field of gravity exists around Earth. When an electrically powered device is plugged into a working socket, there is an electric field around the device and its cord. When the device is turned on, there is both an electric field and a magnetic field around the device and its cord.
Some people are concerned that exposure to EMF can cause negative health effects. To assist utilities in understanding EMF and its effects, UHSG has complied information about EMF and the scientific data exploring its possible health effects.
