Energy Services Specialist

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is currently seeking a member-focused, innovative, and results-oriented Energy Services Specialist.

The Energy Services Specialist will:

  • serve as the subject matter expert for IAMU staff and members on distributed generation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency
  • help promote and manage IAMU programs relating to member education on distributed generation, renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • assist members with industry related regulatory filings as needed.

A bachelor’s degree is required with a degree in engineering preferred, but not required. Any combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered. The ideal candidate will have extensive understanding of the electric utility industry, including its regulatory structure, distributed and utility grade renewable energy and energy efficiency. Experience with municipal utilities is also a plus.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects at once and have excellent written & verbal communications skills. The Energy Services Specialist is required to work collaboratively across functional areas in order to serve the needs of IAMU’s members. Overnight travel is required a few times a year and is typically planned well in advance. The Energy Services Specialist reports to the Executive Director.

IAMU represents more than 550 municipal electric, gas, water and broadband utilities statewide, and maintains a marketing relationship with a large number of associate member businesses. IAMU offers its members advocacy, education and operations support and services with a variety of programs.

  • Serve as consultant for state or federally financed programs, preparing applications, carry out county information programs, assembling data on needs, analyzing probable program results, and advising the Board of Directors on program requirements.
  • Develop a comprehensive economic development plan for Mitchell County.  Work with MCEDC Board of Directors and MCEDC staff to ensure that this plan is updated annually.
  • Prepare the annual plan of work, including annual budget, and specific organization goals and objectives. 
  • Manage organization staff.

MRES is adding a new position at our power facility located near Brayton, Iowa.  Exira Station is a peaking power station utilizing GE LM6000 gas turbines.  The Senior Operations & Maintenance Technician operates, maintains, and repairs the Exira Station ensuring it sustains the highest level of operating status, and is also responsible for various reporting, purchasing, and documentation for the plant.  This position works primarily days Monday through Friday, and is required to be on call 24 hours/day on a rotational basis.  This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Exira Station Plant Manager.  Key job responsibilities include:

  • Operates and oversees the plant and associated equipment for energy production.
  • Evaluates and performs the testing, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance associated with the plant’s control, electrical, and mechanical systems and facilities.
  • Assists with installing equipment modifications and improvements.
  • Follows MRES approved safety practices and procedures, and communicates unsafe conditions.
  • Assists with the purchasing, receipt, inspection and documentation of supplies and materials.
  • Oversees projects and prepares documentation associated with the plant.

    • Reside within 30 minutes of the plant.

    Telecommunications Technician

    MP&W’s Communications utility is seeking team-oriented, customer-focused Telecommunications Technician to perform telecommunications system installations and associated tasks, including drop buries, minor troubleshooting, and repair/replacement of wiring, converters, modems and other system devices. The position will work with customers in performing installations, upgrades, and downgrades of service, including installation and setup of digital set-top boxes, cable modem, and PCs for Internet access and customer-owned equipment (VCRs, DVRs etc).

    SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
    Residence Requirement:
    The required residence area is the area bordered by the Boone and Story County lines on the north and
    south, State Highway 65 on the east; and on the west, County Road R27 north of Boone, and the Des
    Moines River south of Highway 30 to the Boone County line. Communities intersected by the borderlines,
    and Zearing, shall be considered within the area. The permitted residency area is that area inside the
    borderlines. The area adjacent to but outside the borderlines is not included. After completing his/her
    probationary period, a new employee shall, within six (6) months, reside within the residency area. The
    department head may allow an employee up to an additional six (6) months if the employee provides
    documentation of financial commitment to move within the residence area.

    Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) is currently searching for an Information Analyst to join the System Operations team in Cedar Rapids, IA. This position processes load data and determines overall system demand and energy sales to system members, as well as develops numerous energy and demand related reports.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Translate and process CIPCO system and customer billing meters, as well as provide input to the resolution of metering problems.
    • Assist with the deployment of metering and meter interrogation hardware and software as appropriate.
    • Monitor communication paths and meters via remote interrogation to ensure health, reliability and accuracy and report deficiencies as appropriate.
    • Prepare monthly operating report summarizing demand and energy data by substation and cooperative; prepare demand and energy data for cooperative power bills.

    • Maintain various subsidiary programs for other departments.
