The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is seeking a knowledgeable professional to provide leadership, training, support, and serve as a resource to its 755 municipal utility members; more specifically to its approximately 450 safety contract members.  IAMU, located in Ankeny (just north of Des Moines, IA) is a trade association serving cities that operate electric, gas, water and/or broadband utilities in Iowa. Job Summary

  • Plan and facilitate instruction and implement workshops and safety training programs for members, in compliance with regulations issued under OSHA, DOT, EPA, and others

Wastewater Operator II

City of Pella, IA - Wastewater Department position responsible for operating and maintaining a Grade IV activated sludge plant and its related lift stations.  Duties might include:  performing operator duties to meet permit requirements; maintaining lift stations; maintaining equipment at the plant; performing laboratory activities in a state certified laboratory; ordering equipment and chemicals; analyzing water samples; preparing general reports and logs; disposing of bio-solids; performing preventative maintenance and repair work on vehicles and equipment; resolving customer issues; and, installing and troubleshooting computers, modems, and programmable logic controllers which monitor the plant. Apprentice Lineworker

The Owatonna Public Utilities (OPU) has an opening for an Apprentice Lineworker. The primary function of this position is to safely perform skilled electric line work in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems.  Provides timely restoration of electric services to OPU customers.

Under general direction, installs, maintains and repairs the City’s water distribution system. Operates heavy equipment to perform general and emergency construction, maintenance and repair of water mains and related facilities. Performs location of underground water and fiber utilities, water taps and related water customer service work. Investigates customer service complaints. Installs, repairs and maintains water mains, lines, hydrants and valves of the water distribution system. Minimum education, experience and certification
High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of experience in heavy labor and construction or equivalent required. Three years of experience in water system installation and repair preferred. Iowa DNR Grade I Water Distribution Certification required. Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribution Certification preferred. Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribution Certification required within three years of appointment. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tank endorsements required. Valid Iowa Class A commercial driver's license required within 6 months of hire. This position, under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in water and wastewater operations and sampling activities.

Requirements for all candidates include:

  • Minimum of 5-10 years on the job experience and completion of Lineman school, preferred.
  • Ability to work safely, communicate effectively, work in high or confined spaces, and operate heavy construction equipment.

Responsibilities include supporting efforts to ensure effective and efficient monitoring, recordkeeping, and sampling activities in compliance with appropriate regulations and permit requirements, including:

  • PCB monitoring
  • Groundwater monitoring at the CCR landfill
  • Underground and above ground storage tank monitoring
  • Hazardous/solid waste storage, treatment, and disposal activities
  • NPDES permit requirements
  • Title V permit requirements
  • SARA requirements, including TRI and Tier 2 Reports

Associates to Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or other applicable field of science and 3+ years of environmental experience in the Energy Industry or related field required.  Working knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including PCB regulations and Monofill landfill regulations required.

Senior Engineer

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering, assists with civil engineering studies, project design, review and inspections relating to the City’s infrastructure. This position will also have responsibly to design Capital Improvement Projects as well as oversight for the asset management database of the City’s infrastructure. Also, reviews easement documents, design and construction projects (preliminary plats, final plats, construction drawings, site plans and legal descriptions/easement documents) in accordance with state laws and engineering standards; minimizing risk to the public, and managing public resources responsibly. This position has oversight of the City Geographical Information Systems (GIS) base mapping to facilitate mapping and asset management of city infrastructure and electronic file structure.

This position is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the Red Rock Hydroelectric Plant (RRHP) to ensure it sustains the highest level of operating status.  The RRHP Operator works primarily Monday through Friday, primarily days and is required to be on call 24 hours/day on a rotational basis.  This is a non-exempt position reporting to the RRHP Supervisor.  Key job responsibilities include:  

  • Operates the plant and associated equipment for energy production.
  • Evaluates and performs the testing, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance associated with the plant’s control and electrical systems and facilities.
  • Assists with installing equipment modifications and improvements.
  • Follows MRES approved safety practices and procedures, and communicates unsafe conditions.
  • Completes the maintenance for all building and grounds.
  • Assists with the purchasing, receipt, inspection and documentation of supplies and materials.
  • Oversees projects and prepares documentation associated with the plant. 


  • Minimum of ten years of work experience with instrumentation and controls and/or electrical equipment, or in an instrument and control trade.
  • Two year diploma or  Associate’s degree in instrumentation and controls or equivalent formal training.
  • Demonstrated trouble-shooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven analytical skills and a strong detail orientation.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of initiative and a collaborative work style.
  • Organizational and project management capabilities.
  • Experience with an asset management system and Microsoft Office.

Other Requirements:

  • Reside within 30 minutes of the plant.
  • Be on call and fit for duty on a rotational basis 24 hours/day within 30 minutes of the plant, to respond to emergency situations.
  • Current valid state driver’s license.
  • Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time and work at heights and in confined areas.
  • Lift objects weighing 50 pounds.
  • Normal color vision.
  • Handle or work with toxic/hazardous substances, operate and work around energized equipment.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather.

Decorah, IA - Notice to Fiber-to-the-Premise Network Design Consultants

The Decorah Telecommunications Utility is seeking proposals for a Fiber to the Premise Feasibility Study. The purpose of this effort is to hire a qualified consulting firm to provide insight on the feasibility of installing fiber to the premise within the city limits of Decorah.

This Request for Proposal (RFP) is intended to generate responses to the set of defined issues listed within the Scope of Work section, and also stimulate creative ideas that will add value to the envisioned concept of a fiber to the premise (“FTTP”) network in the city.

The utility commission is issuing this RFP for the purpose of selecting a qualified contractor to provide, at competitive and reasonable costs, professional consulting services to conduct a study of the feasibility of the Decorah telecommunications utility providing a fiber to the premise (“FTTP”) network. The proposed study is complex in nature and includes a review of salient issues perhaps not seen in communities of similar size or demographics.
