|LED Street Lighting|
Iowa's municipal utilities are national leaders in adopting LED street lighting. IAMU has helped them lead the way with a joint purchase program for LED street light fixtures, a handbook and financial calculators, and a variety of workshops and presentations led by national experts.
For an overview of of LED street light technology, IAMU has developed a presentation of frequently asked questions.
LED Handbook and Calculator
Through the assistance of an American Public Power Association (APPA) DEED grant and an Iowa Energy Center grant, IAMU wrote an LED Street Lighting handbook for small communities and developed a calculator tool to help cities evaluate the financial benefit of retrofitting existing street lights to LED fixtures.
The handbook contains a detailed frequently asked question section, a discussion of federal and state rules governing street light design, three example street light designs for common roadway configurations, and instructions on how to develop a street light retrofit project and develop a request for proposals.
The calculator is an Excel-based tool that allows the user to determine the annual energy and maintenance savings as well as the simple payback that would be achieved through retrofitting existing street light fixtures to LED fixtures.
The DOE Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium shares technical information and experiences related to LED street and area lighting demonstrations and serves as an objective resource for evaluating new products on the market intended for those applications. Cities, municipal utilities, and others who are involved in LED street lighting are encouraged to join this free collaborative. IAMU is a member of the MSSLC, and used its model specification as the basis of it's LED street light fixture RFP.
The DOE GATEWAY demonstrations perform real world performance test on a range of LED lighting products including street light fixtures. The tests provide LED purchasers with data on the best LED fixtures available.
